3 Simple Ways to Improve your Mindset

One of my favorite fitness instructors is famously known for saying, “You don’t HAVE to, you GET to!” I love this saying! Not only because it puts into perspective how much of a privilege it is that I am physically able to show up for the class, but also that I have a choice to acknowledge that privilege in every aspect of my life. This mindset shift is so profound!

When we start looking at the world through a lens of gratitude, we show up better for everything and life feels more in flow. I don’t HAVE to eat this salad, I GET to nourish my body with life-giving nutrients. I don’t HAVE to go to work, I GET to show up for my clients and my colleagues and bring home a paycheck.

And… I get to choose HOW I show up! How empowering is that? Instead of talking ourselves out of the things that are good for us because it’s easier to hit snooze one more time or watch one more episode on Netflix, we choose to move toward those things we say we want because we can!

Here are 3 Tips for a “You Get To” Mindset shift

Don’t wait until you FEEL like doing something. Chances are you never will. Motivation is something that comes with action, not vice versa. I’ve found Mel Robbins’ 5 second rule to be really helpful in propelling me to do the things I’m not very excited about.

Start a gratitude practice. Notice all the little details in your life that you can be thankful for and write them down each day. This teaches your brain to always be looking for the positive, to seek out things you can be thankful for.

Every time you walk into a new space, use the doorframe as a cue to ask yourself, “How do I want to show up in this space? Who do I want to be?” Then do it!
